Tips for getting noticed online

When it comes to websites, I am sorry to say, but there is no such thing as build it and they will come.

One of the first questions that I ask when first meeting with a client is “Do you have a marketing plan?”

80% of the time I get a bewildered look. A silent pause, and then a look of panic and confusion.

‘Oh I have a facebook page’. Awesome. It’s a start but it’s a small piece of the puzzle.

I have built a crap load of websites over the years, and I have seen a large percentage of them wither and fail, simply because people expect online sales to just pour in just by launching. It’s really devastating to see.

Remember your website is competing with 1 billion other websites!

Marketing strategies are unique to individual businesses. What works for some, may not work for others. However I am going to share with you a few tips that I have found helpful to me.

Do good things

Do good work. Be a nice human. Word of mouth will spread your message near and far and won’t cost you a cent except your skills/amazing products and a little bit of kindness.

Create amazing content

A lot of people who are in the game of ideas will resist this immensely, why give up my ideas for free? Well you don’t have to give away everything, but giving people a taste of what you’re about is going to want them asking for more. Come from a place of service and not sales.

Be Authentic, Be Seen

I know I’ve struggled with this coming back from maternity leave, putting myself out there again. But if you don’t show up and be yourself how are people going to connect with you. Social media is the best place for this, and you don’t have to be polished. Just be yourself, people connect with that.

Optimise for Search Engines

Now this will depend on the type of business you have but not being found on google is obviously not going to be helpful to being found online. Invest some time (or money if you hire someone) in this area. And just an FYI just by launching a website you’re not going to appear instantly (it can take weeks).

Remember none of this is going to get you business overnight. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Research, be prepared & have a plan.
